Earthquake and orphanage info

I copied the following information from a website called "China Adopt Talk" ... better known Rumor Queen.

May 19th, 2008
Monday morning, May 19th: HTS reports that Mianyang has become a major refugee center. There are more than 20,000 refugees in the city’s stadium. They are told (but have not confirmed) that the entire center area of the stadium is reserved for toddlers and infants. HTS has someone headed there now so they should know more soon.
Many children who have lost their families, or become separated from their families, have been taken to Chengdu, but not yet to the CWI. There is an after school and weekend activity center that is currently housing them.
Around 30 children were taken to the Chengdu City Park, which is also being used as a refugee camp. Some children have been reunited with family members, and HTS says that some from the media are actively trying to reunite families.

Thursday morning, May 15th: I’m still updating this as I get information so if you have information about an orphanage please let me know.
Half the Sky is giving daily updates at their main page, and you can donate to HTS at this link: www.globalgiving.com/pr/2100/proj2086a.html. Half the Sky has people on the ground there and have even been able to give assistance to the Red Cross.
LWB and OCDF also have earthquake funds set up, and appear to have people on the ground who can help. During the snow storms HTS seemed to be the only one in a position with people on the ground close enough to help, but this time we have several organizations with that ability.

I’m bumping this one back to the top this morning. The asterisks note the areas closest to the epicenter.
As I hear reports of individual orphanages or other programs I will report them here, as well as where I’ve seen the information.
Aba: Unknown (52 children according to HTS)
Baoji, Shaanxi: No injuries reported. Minor damage to the building but they are able to remain inside. (LWB) OCDF reports the water tower is cracked.
Bazhon CWI: Children are safe. Severe damage to building (HTS)
Chengdu: Safe, children are outside of the building during the day due to aftershocks. When it rains they go into the institution’s buses. At night they are on the first floor of the Children’s Building. There are cracks in some (but not all) buildings. (HTS and Agency). OCDF reports there is no electricity, water, or gas. This orphanage reportedly has around 600 orphans. They need diapers since they cannot wash. HTS reports the orphanage is having trouble finding supplies of milk and formula.

Chungdu SOS Children’s Village: Safe (HTS)
Chongqing: Safe (HTS, OCDF, and an agency)
*Deyang: Children are safe, minor damage to building (LWB OCDF). Dormitory for school aged children was severely damaged. Other buildings appear fine but for the time being everyone is living in tents. Much that was pulled from the building has been ruined by the rain. They request bedding and children’s clothing. HTS reports they have disposable diapers left over from the storm but will be running out of those as well as formula in a few days. OCDF reports they need diapers and food now. The orphanage has been notified that they should prepare to receive newly orphaned children. HTS will provide them with additional tents, beds, and other requested items.
Dianjiang, Chongqing: Children are safe, no damage to building (Parent)
*Dujiangyan: Children are safe. Children have been evacuated. Their temporary shelter has no tap water or electricity. They urgently need food, clean water, diapers, and powdered milk. (HTS)
Fuling, Chongqing: Children are okay, no damage to current building. New building that is still under construction and not occupied sustained structural damage. (Parent and Agency) LWB and OCDF report damage to the building and are not clear if it is the new building or the one currently occupied. An agency reports cracks in the buildings currently occupied.
Fungdu: Safe, no damage to building. (OCDF and Parent)
Ganzi CWI: Safe (HTS)
Guang’an SWI: Safe (HTS)
*Guanghan: Unknown
Guangyuan SWI: Safe, staying in tents outdoors for now. (Parent and HTS) They request food, formula, clean water for formula, diapers, bedding, and other daily necessities. (HTS) The children remain in tents. The orphanage has been notified that they will be receiving perhaps 50 to 60 additional orphaned children soon. (HTS)
Ganzizhou: Unknown
Hanzhong City SWI, Shaanxi Province: Children are safe, staying outside of building due to aftershocks. There are reports that the buildings sustained significant damage, and other reports the building sustained minor damage. There are tents set up for now. (Parent) Water pipes burst, water tower has cracks. Children have been evacuated and they need more tents, bedding, and clean water. (HTS)
Jiangzhang SWI: Safe, no damage (Parent)
Leshan SWI: Safe (HTS)
Liangping SWI : Children are Safe (OCDF, Parent, and agency). Reports of serious structural damage. (2 Agencies)
Mama’s Wish: Teachers and students safe (LWB)
Meishan SWI: Children are safe and have been evacuated to tents. Building has cracks. They request 20 cribs and bedding. (HTS)
*Mianyang CWI: Children are Safe. (Parent, HTS, OCDF) Severely damaged walls, children have been moved to a military base. They have an urgent need for diapers, bedding, powdered milk, and clean water. (HTS) UPDATE: Children have been returned to the institution from the military base to a safe building on the grounds. They have adequate food and water. They request clothes, bedding, formula, diapers, and cold medicine.
Mianzhu SWI: Building was leveled. The children were all in foster care and are safe.
Nanbu: Children are safe. Building has cracks. (Agency)
Nanchong #1: Safe (Agency and OCDF).
Nanchong #2: Children are safe (Agency, OCDF, HTS). Damage to buildings (OCDF and HTS) They need tents (HTS) Substantial damage to buildings. 100 plus children, most under six years old, are living in tents. They need more tents, disposable diapers, children’s clothing, wagons, cribs, and bedding. (HTS) The orphanage has been notified that they should prepare to receive newly orphaned children. HTS will provide them with additional tents, beds, and other requested items.
Nanchuan, Chongqing: Safe, no damage reported. (LWB and Agency)
Neijiang: Children are safe. Some structural damage to possibly several buildings. (HTS, OCDF, and Parent) Updated information from HTS says no serious damage, but OCDF reports the walls are cracked everywhere.
Panzhihua: Unknown
Rongxian: Unknown
Santai County: Unknown
Suining SWI: Safe (HTS)
Wanzhou: Children are safe. Building has cracks (Agency)
Wenjiang County: Unknown
Xiushan, Chongqing: Safe, no damage reported. (LWB and Agency)
Yibin: Safe (HTS and OCDF)
Yunyang, Chongqing: Safe. (LWB and Agency) LWB reports there is no damage to the building, but an agency reports there is some damage to the building.
Zhaotong Foster Care program, Yunnan: Safe (LWB and Agency)
Zigong CWI: Children are safe. They need bedding, powdered milk, crackers and disposable diapers (HTS) OCDF reports the foster children are safe as well.
*Zitong County: Children are safe and have been evacuated. (Parent)
Ziyang SWI: Children are safe. Building sustained severe damage. They have 48 childre, 20 of them under four years old. they need cribs, cots, bandages, clothes, bedding, bowls, spoons, chopsticks, toys. (HTS)
I’ve seen people concerned about other orphanages within the Sichuan province, so I’ll address those as well:
We know Yibin is safe, and Luzhou is near Yibin and also far from the quake zone so is also likely safe.
I will note that until we hear from the “should be okay” orphanages then we don’t know for sure. There are scattered deaths in the other provinces, many of which appear to be kind of freaky things that happened, scattered incidences, like the water tower falling. It is likely that those orphanages are safe, but I’m sure we’ll have word from them as soon as communication is up. Most parent groups for the orphanages seem to have someone who can contact the orphanage directly, so if you hear that your child’s orphanage is safe, please let me know. I’ll make a note to the side that the news comes from a parent, no names given. The same goes if your agency verifies that an orphanage is okay, I’ll just make a note to the side that the news comes from an agency.
